Chapter 7

The men in the cell freed us. They were low-level crooks and one-time offenders, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. I spotted Kevin at the back but since he was supposed to be nothing special to me, so I ignored him. A skinny man with a huge Adam's apple and big eyes approached, looking us up and down.

"Scared!" he shouted.

"No more than you, asshole," Gary grumbled.

"Ignore him," a wrinkled old man said. "That's OneWord. We call him that because that's all he ever says. Always gets it right, though."

"You're Chef," I said.

"I am."

"I remember you from intake. Your file says you are locked up for bomb-making but you never actually hurt anyone."

"That's right. But I sure scared the shit out of plenty."

"Including a federal judge, if I remember right."

"You do. I never thought I'd be happy to see the men that locked me up."

"You got yourself locked up," Jason barked.

"What's happening in here?" I asked, ignoring Jason. "Why are you all clumped together? What do they plan?"

"Guapo's guys got surprised by the Ramirez gang," Chef said. "Guapo only had a few guys locked up with him. The others help him for the money. Guapo pays blood money to families. Ramirez has a lot of gang members in here with him. He saw his chance to kill Guapo and took it."

"Why does he want Guapo dead so badly?"

Chef chuckled.

"Rumor says Guapo stole Ramirez's wife. He had her kidnapped but then stayed with him of her own free will. Guapo likes taking other men's wives and girlfriends. Ramirez had his wife killed and now guns for Guapo."

"They transfer Guapo all over the country. They move him every few months. How did he pull all this off?"

"That fucker, Reggie. He joined the prison system a while ago. Learned everything he needed to know. He's smart. Ruthless. He'll take over when Guapo's gone. He brought all the pieces together. He's Guapo's cousin. They grew up in the same small town. They were kids together."

"Reggie will pay a special price," Jason growled.

"How do we get out of here?" I asked.

"We were discussing that before you arrived," Chef said. "Guapo's men keep adding people to this holding cell. We outnumber them by a lot now. We thought we'd jump them the next time and free ourselves, but what's the point? The prison is split now: the Ramirez gang holds less than half, but it includes the front way out and the path to the roof. Guapo's men hold the rest. He has a helicopter coming but can't get to it."

"Will Guapo take Katie with him?" Jason asked.

Chef looked at him funny.

"Probably," he said. "I would, if I was younger. Every man here would."

"Conjugal!" OneWord shouted.

"Reggie bragged that Guapo was fucking Katie. That information spread fast. Ramirez will want her because Guapo had her. That poor girl."

My wife had been reduced to currency, a coin bouncing in the pocket of ruthless men.

"Let's plan our escape," I said. "We can rescue others after that."

"Liberation!" OneWord shouted.
